Though day spas are some of the most relaxing places on earth, opening a spa can be quite stressful. Much planning and consideration has to go into opening your own business, but with care and a great plan, your business can thrive.
- Figure out which services you would like to include on the menu at your spa. Popular services include manicures, pedicures, massages, facials and body treatments.
- Research other spas in your area to find out which service are most popular and be sure to include them in your spa menu.
- Develop a business plan. You can speak to others who have been in the spa business for a number of years to get some good advice. Include all start up costs for equipment, deposits, rent and payroll as well as projected income. Remember that most new businesses don’t turn a profit for at least a year.
- Go to your bank and apply for a small business start up loan. Be confident when talking to the loan officer and present your business plan with ease.
- Find an appropriate location for your spa. Consider traffic in your area. Find a building that suits your needs and has enough work areas, lounge areas and bathrooms.
- Visit your local city hall and apply for a business license. Join the local Better Business Bureau to ensure good future contacts.
- Go shopping. Look online and in trade magazines for exactly the right equipment for your spa. Choose an opening date and begin advertising for your grand opening.
- Place ads for potential employees both online and in the local newspaper. Call the local trade schools and barber schools and ask about any recent graduates that are seeking jobs in the spa industry.
- Once you have hired your staff and stocked your building, hold a meeting with your staff to explain business procedures. Over staff for your grand opening and be prepared to have good time.
